Pubs & Pub Food
Traditionally British pubs were a place to enjoy a pint of ale or two, but these days many pubs offer top quality food to accompany your drink. Whether you want breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a light snack, there is plenty of ‘pub grub' to choose from in pubs across the UK.
Pubs - Flavours to savour
If you're wanting to try authentic British pub grub then you'll want to go for typically British cuisine, such as steak and kidney pie, shepherd's pie, fish and chips, hot pot and ploughman's lunch, which always seem to be on the menu in a pub.
However, in recent years, international cuisines such as Italian, Indian, Chinese and Mexican have also made an appearance on pub menus with dishes such as curries, lasagne, stir-fries, and fajitas proving poular with the crowds. So, whatever your taste, you'll probably enjoy pub grub in the UK.
Pubs - First visit food
The choice of food available at a pub is usually quite broad so you'll probably find something on the menu that takes your fancy on your first visit. However, if the aim of the game is to eat a traditional pub meal then you'll want to opt for an English dish, preferably homemade, such as steak and kidney pie, shepherd's pie or beef hot pot.
There is usually a choice of starters on the menu too, such as soup, garlic bread and prawn cocktail, while for desert you could have chocolate cake, ice cream sundae or banoffee pie. Delicious!
Get a feel for pubs
There are a wide variety of pubs in the UK today, with traditional alehouses now standing side by side with modern bars. You will find that only some traditional pubs sell food, and some only sell it at certain times of day, but the atmosphere in a traditional pub tends to be friendly, cosy and homelike. The modern equivalent, however, will probably serve food throughout the day in a light, bright, minimalist and lively atmosphere.

These days there are many chain pubs in the UK, which all offer food in a relaxed atmosphere, as well as some top quality gastropubs that are worth checking out if you want award-winning pub food, including:

The Slug and Lettuce, nationwide - This chain of pubs is owned by SFI Group plc and offers a wide range of constantly changing cuisine that has an emphasis on home-cooked dishes.
JD Wetherspoon, nationwide - Although these pubs have different names, such as The Match Maker in London and The Greyfriar in Preston, they all serve food from the same menu, which includes steak, burgers, salads, lasagne, and much more.
Brewsters, nationwide - Family orientated and lively, this pub chain has extensive adult and children's menus, along with a play area for kids.
Things to look out for at pubs in the UK
There are few things to look out for when you're searching for tasty pub grub, the main thing being a gastropub, which is an upmarket pub offering high-quality meals. The gastropub was born in the early 1990s when David Eyre and Mike Belben opened a pub called The Eagle in London. The emphasis here was on the quality of the food served, as oppose to the drinks on offer, and soon other pub owners caught on to its appeal.
Gastropubs tend to have an relaxed atmosphere and focus on offering cuisine that is prepared as well as it is in the best restaurants. As well as good food you should also find that a gastropub has a good selection of drinks, and the waiters will probably be able to advise you on the best wine to go with your meal.
It is also worth noting here that some pubs only serve food on certain days of the week and at restrcited times, so always check before you arrive to avoid disappointment.
